Archive Trawler

One search across many archives.

Archive Trawler's search form, in Dutch: fields for keywords, surname (Visser), name prefix, first name (Johanna) and the years 1850 to 1920, and below them the archives to search, with Archief van Amsterdam ticked.
The search form, with an example name typed in: who, which years, and which archives to search. The search itself needs a free account.

Archive Trawler searches many archives at once by name, so you don’t have to go through each archive on its own. I made it as my first-year IPASS project at Hogeschool Utrecht, in Java. It runs at archivetrawler.reddy.world. The first visit after a quiet spell takes up to a minute while the server wakes up.

What you can do

  • Search by surname, name prefix, first name and keywords, between two years.
  • Choose which archives to search, and search them all in one go.
  • Search more than 200 Dutch archives through OpenArchieven.nl, among them Stadsarchief Amsterdam, Nationaal Archief, Gelders Archief and AlleFriezen, and filter by place, period, kind of record and role.
  • Also search the UK National Archives (Discovery) and Europeana’s photos and objects.

How it works

Many archives, one question. You fill in the form once and tick the archives you want. Archive Trawler searches them at the same time, by name, so you don’t have to visit each one.

A Dutch name in three parts. The form asks for the prefix, such as “van” or “de”, in its own field, next to the surname and the first name.
